Neuroverse 7. A Podcast by Neuroverse: Tools for Looking into the Brain: Happily Ever After- You Finally Landed a PI Job, Now What?
About the episode
"Happily Ever After – You Finally Landed a PI Job, Now What?" is the seventh episode of the joint mini-series “Tools for Looking into the Brain” with Neuroverse. In this episode, hosts Carolina and Clara are joined by Dr. Elisa Galliano—a neuroscientist, lecturer, and principal investigator at the University of Cambridge—to discuss the challenges and realities of starting your own lab.
They explore Elisa’s journey to securing a PI position, how she launched her lab during the COVID-19 pandemic, and what the role of a PI truly entails beyond just running a lab. The conversation also delves into navigating academia’s complexities and finding long-term stability in the field.
About Dr Elisa Galliano
Elisa first obtained a BSc in biology and MSc in neurobiology in Italy, at the University of Pavia, where her first interests led her to investigate cellular and synaptic computations in the cerebellum. She then moved to Chris De Zeeuw’s laboratory in Rotterdam, Netherlands for her graduate studies, where she expanded her training in cellular as well as systems and behavioural neuroscience. Following that, she became a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow and spent 4 years investigating experience-driven plasticity in neurons of the olfactory bulb, particularly dopaminergic interneurons, and how such plastic modifications influence olfactory behaviour in Matthew Grubb's lab (King’s College London) and Venki Murthy's lab (Harvard University). In May 2018 she started her own lab at the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, and in October 2020 she joined Fitzwilliam College as a Fellow and Director of Studies in Biological Natural Sciences.

About Carolina and Clara
Carolina and Clara are both neuroscientists and curious about the world and our perception of it. Their love for exploring ideas and bridging connections across various disciplines drew them to the interdisciplinary field of neuroscience. Together, they established Neuroverse as a platform for exploring and sharing ideas within and beyond neuroscience. Their goal is to create content that is accessible and engaging for both scientists and non-scientists alike.
